The popularity of the shooting game Fortnite is the reason for hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of divorces in the United Kingdom. That is the claim of the company divorce-online.co.uk after examining 200 divorce petitions. If that trend continues, the company expects Fortnite to be the driving force behind almost 5,000 British divorces this year. In 2016, the most recent year with available figures, a total of 107,071 divorces were granted in Great Britain.
“Fortnite is one of the most addictive games ever made. More and more people are struggling with relationship problems because of their online addictions,” explains a spokesperson for divorce-online.co.uk. It is not clear whether more women or more men cite Fortnite as a (contributing) reason for divorce.
The shooting game has been downloaded 125 million times and has 40 million active players. Gamers fight each other until one ‘survivor’ is left. The game is designed so that players always want to keep playing. They get rewards when they reach a new level, and they feel peer pressure from teammates not to let each other down.
Its maker, Epic Games, achieved a turnover of 223 million dollars in March 2018. Petitions are circulating online asking for the game to be taken off the market. “This game has destroyed my relationship,” one of them reads.
