Children spend more time on their phones than outside

Children play with their phones more than they play outside with their friends. On average they spend about 2.5 hours a day on a screen, while they play outside for just under 2 hours a day.

Half of all five to ten-year-olds already have their own smartphone.

Cybersecurity company Norton surveyed 7,000 people in ten countries in Europe and the Middle East, including the Netherlands. It shows that Dutch children are ten years old on average when they get their first phone or tablet. But half of all five to ten-year-olds already have their own smartphone.

Today’s parents are the first generation to deal with this. They have to figure out for themselves which rules to set and how strictly to enforce them. They cannot ask their own parents how they handled it, because there were no tablets and smartphones back then. Today’s children, on the other hand, have never known a world without such devices. And it is questionable whether parents set a good example, because more than half say they are online too much themselves.
